Brief Introduction

Jiangxi Normal Universityis one of the members of state-province jointly construction and mid-western infrastructure projects. The University's fields of study include Philosophy, Economics, Law, Education, Literature, History, Science, Engineering, Management, and Fine Arts. The University is located in the capital of Jiangxi province, Nanchang, a city rich in historical and cultural background and well-known for its reputation for natural abundance and heroic endeavor. The University has a considerable influence on the political, economic, cultural and social development of Jiangxi province, and the provincial government has designated it a priority normal University at the provincial level. At present, there are 2 campuses, i.e. Yaohu Lake Campus and Qingshanhu Lake Campus. The University occupies an area of more than 230 ha, and its buildings have a total floor space of more than 1,400,000㎡. The University library possesses 3.23 million volumes of hardcopy literature and 3.49 million volumes of e-books. The Yaohu Lake Campus is not enclosed by a wall: rather, it is encircled by the 7km Yaohu Canal, giving it a particular social and ecological character of its own.

Historical Development

The school's historical antecedents might be said to include the White Deer Cave Academy on Mt. Lushan, founded in the Tang dynasty and revived by Zhu Xi in the Song period. Its modern history began in 1940 with the founding of National Chun Cheng University, named after the Nationalist leader Jiang Zhongzheng, better known in English as Chiang Kai-shek. The name was changed in 1949 to Nanchang University, and again in 1953 to Jiangxi Normal Academy. In 1983 it was given its present name, Jiangxi Normal University. It has the longest history of offering undergraduate education of any general institution of higher learning in Jiangxi province. In 2003, the Jiangxi Worker's University of Finance (Jiangxi Banking School) merged with our University.

Academic Establishment

The University has the right to grant doctoral degrees, as well as it is the first batch of colleges or universities which are authorized to grant bachelor’s and master’s degrees throughout China. JXNU offers degrees in Philosophy, Economics, Law, Education, Literature, History, Science, Engineering, Management, and Fine Arts. There are 23 colleges under the University, in addition to an independent college (College of Science and Technology), with 89 bachelor’sdegree programs. It has 9 disciplines in which it is authorized to grant doctoral degrees at the highest level (Marxist Theory, Chinese Language and Literature, Chemistry, Psychology, Education, History of China, Mathematics, Geography, and Management Science and Engineering), 5 mobile post-doctoral stations, 31 disciplines in which it is authorized to grant master’s degrees at the first level, and 17 other programs which may grant professional master’s degrees. Marxist Theory, Chemistry, Psychology, and Chinese Language and Literature are selected as the first-class disciplines of Jiangxi province. One discipline(Chemistry) enters global top 100 according to the Essential Science Indicators. The discipline of Marxist Theory graded at the level of A, and Education, Psychology, Chinese Language and Literature, Mathematics and Chemistry graded at the level of B in the fourth round of subject evaluation.

Training of Talents

JXNU presently has more than 30,000 full-time undergraduate students in 89 bachelor programs, more than 5,000 students studying for doctoral and masters’ degrees and more than 10,000 in adult education certificate courses. The University has gained second prize of teaching achievement at national level for four times and won first prize for once, two national level pilot projects in disciplinary renovations. It has sixdistinctive specializations at national level, two national level off-campus practicing education bases, one national level humanity spirit education base, two national level demonstration center of experimental teaching, one national level virtual simulation experiment teaching project, three national level high quality course, two national level high quality sharing course, one national level high quality online video course, two national level teaching teams, one Huang Danian teaching team, five sets of teaching materials included in the Ministry of Education “Multiple New Teaching Materials” scheme; seven projects in the provincial outstanding talent nurturing scheme, four talent training mode innovation experiment area, ten provincial level pilot projects in disciplinary renovations, eleven provincial first-class majors (advantage majors), tendistinctive specializations, twenty-five Brand Specializations at the provincial level, twenty-six provincial level high quality courses, twenty-five provincial-level high quality sharing courses, six provincial-level high quality online video course, three educational course sharing program, five provincial level demonstration courses in bilingual education, seven provincial level teaching teams, one national education master joint demonstration base, four provincial level innovation bases in graduate student education, seven provincial enterprise joint training base, eight provincial level centers in Experimental Teaching. Since 1999 the University has been implementing a reform of the credit system, with the aim of encouraging personal responsibility, a spirit of creativity, and practical ability. The key points are “Proper management of credit, modularization of the curriculum, allowing choice in training, and the adoption of open teaching methods”. The University aims to educate a new kind of high-level specialist, with “deep foundations in specialist study, broad disciplinary capacity, high moral character and great practical ability”. In the Ministry of Education’s 2005 evaluation of the level of our undergraduate teaching our results were “Excellent”. From 2008 on, the University has recruited students according to the “first-level discipline cut-off mark” system. In recent years, the school has established an educational concept centered on “learning”, focusing on the goal of cultivating the backbone of the society, focusing on satisfying students’ four rational choices in their profession, knowledge and ability structure, teachers and their teaching methods, and independent development. In 2012, the University first initiated the student training innovation project titled “Zhengda Student”. In 2013, the University started the free-tuition teacher training programme for one thousand students, and the continuous academic programs from bachelor’s degree to master’s degree, from master’s degree to doctoral degree. Bachelor’s degree graduates from the University have a rate of first employment which is always round 90%. For many years, these rates have been the best among Jiangxi higher education institutions. In 2011, our University was among the top 50 schools in the rate of employment of graduates over the country. In 2012, the school was approved to be the first batch of pilot institutions for education informatization in undergraduate colleges and universities in the country; in the comprehensive evaluation of undergraduate majors in ordinary colleges and universities in Jiangxi province (2015-2018), our school has a total of 66 majors participating in the assessment, ranking second in the province, of which 28 majors are ranked first, and a total of 57 majors are ranked in the top three. Among the majors with 5 or more universities participating in the assessment, 20 majors from our school topped the list, and the number ranked first in the province; 45 majors ranked top three, take up the highest proportion in the province. In 2016, it was approved by the Ministry of Education as a national university practice and education innovation and entrepreneurship base, becoming the first local normal university in the country and the only university approved in Jiangxi province. In 2017, it was selected as the first batch of national demonstration universities for deepening innovation and entrepreneurship education reform. The same year, it was selected as a national demonstration universities for teachers’ evaluation and reform. In 2018, it won the top 50 universities in China for typical experience in innovation and entrepreneurship.

The University currently has one national engineering research centre(National Engineering Research Center for Carbonhydrate Synthesis), one national local joint engineering laboratory for Zeolite Membrane, one National Freshwater Fish Processing Technology Research Center, one national university science park, two national experimental teaching demonstration centers, two China Ministry of Education key laboratories(Key Laboratory of Poyang Lake Wetland and Watershed Research under the Ministry of Education, and Key Laboratory of Functional Small Organic Molecule under the Ministry of Education), Madagascar Research Center, one National College Counselor Development Research Center, two international S&T cooperation bases, one key lab under the General Administration of Sport, one state level S&T service platform, four CTTI source think tanks, two provincial key think tanks, six provincial level “2011 Collaborative Innovation Centers”, three high level innovation platform projects for higher education institutions in Jiangxi Province, ten provincial key labs, four provincial engineering research centers, threeProvincial Exemplar Cultivation Bases of Production-education-research Integration, two provincial engineering labs, four provincial key research bases of Philosophy and Social Sciences, nine provincial key research bases of Humanities and Social Sciences, two key research bases of Culture and Arts of the provincial department of culture, one Jiangxi Provincial Integrity Culture Research Center, ten provincial technology centers of Software Sciences. Since 2010, the University has won one second-level national prize for progress in Science and Technology, one second prize of S&T progress among nationaluniversity research achievements, and twooutstanding achievement awards for Humanities and Social Science and Science of Education, and been awarded one grants for key projects of the national-level social science fund, four grant for significant bidding project, twelve significant projects, one major international cooperative research project of NSFC,one special project of the National-level “863”Project,one Pre-research “973”Project, one significant earmarked international cooperation project, one S&T support project of the national-level, two hundred and twenty nine national social science fund projects, four hundred and ninety four national natural science fund projects, four national software science projects. The Universityhas won over thirty Jiangxi province-level projectsincluding key special S&T projects of Jiangxi province, projects of the S&T execution program of Jiangxi Provincial Education Department, significant bidding projects of Jiangxi Economic and Social Development, key projects of Philosophy and Social Sciences Fund for higher education institutions in Jiangxi province.Since 2012,the University’s total amount of research fund added up to 100 million yuan, total number of national-level social science fund projects and natural science fund projects ranked 10th among Normal Universities. In 2016, the Universityhas won forty one national social science fund projects, including three major bidding and commissioned projects. The total number of projects approved for the year ranked 7th in the nation’ s universities, and ranked the first among the national normal colleges and universities in the province. By 2018, fifty two projects approved by national natural science foundation.According to Nature Index published in 2018, JXNU ranks 77^th among Chinese universities. JXNU publishes five journals, among which, three are Core Chinese Journals, and two are CSSCI source journals. Journal of Jiangxi Normal University (Philosophy and Social Sciences Edition) was selected into the report on AMI comprehensive evaluation of Chinese Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences (2018), which made it be the only comprehensive journal of University that has been selected into the core journals of three authoritative evaluation systems in China at the same time.

Teaching Staff

The School has 2630 teachers and administrative staff on its payroll, including 1750 full-time teachers, 818 of whom already have or are completing doctoral degrees. 18.69% of the teaching staff is 35 years old or less; 55.09% have senior academic rank; 86.23% have Master’s or higher degrees.

Among the whole faculty, three are part-time academicians from Chinese Academy of Sciences, four are included in the national “Top 1000 Talent Programme”, one is in the “Young Overseas High-level Talents Introduction Plan”, one part-time professor is recipient of National Outstanding Youth Fund, one is “Nationally-renown Teacher”, four are candidates of the national “Baiqianwan Talents for the New Century” Programme, one are young or middle aged young experts who have made nationally outstanding contributions, one “Nationally Prominent Technology Expert”, two teachersare included in the 7th session discipline appraisal group of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, two teachers are included in the “Supporting Project of Excellent Talent for the New Century” of the Ministry of Education, two teachers are included in the “Hundred-scholar Project" of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. All together, fourteen teachers have been awarded the title of “National Model Teacher”, or “Nationally Outstanding Teacher”，or “Nationally Outstanding Academic Teacher of Ideology and Political Theory”, or “Nationally Outstanding Education Worker”, or “Advanced Art Education Worker” or “Nationally Outstanding Young Physical Education Teacher”. There is one supervisor authorizedby the 5th Construction of Party Spirit and Incorruptibility Government and Police, eleven members of the College Teaching Steering Committee of the Ministry of Education, and one member of the National Primary and Middle School Physical Education Steering Committee.

In terms of provincial excellent talents, the school currently has seventeenteachersgained the provincial “Double Thousand Talent Plan”, four distinguished “Jinggang Scholars”, and eight teachers gained the provincial “Young Jinggang Scholars Award”, thirteen Provincially-renown Teachers, forty-six candidates of the “Jiangxi Province Baiqianwan Talents for the New Century” Programme, thirty-seven candidates of “Ganpo Programme 555 for Outstanding Talent” (among whom, ten are part-time), nine are in the Jiangxi scheme for Fostering Leaders in Basic Disciplines and Technology into the New Century, fifty-seven are Jiangxi Province Higher Education Young or Middle-aged Academic Leaders, forty-eight“Mainstay Young Teachers in Jiangxi Higher Education”, twenty-two teachers who are receiving special subsidies from the State Council and five who are receiving special subsidies from the Provincial Government. In 2017, JXNU was selected into the national “Demonstration School of University Teacher Assessment and Evaluation Reform”.

Student Competition

The University endeavors to develop the quality of its students through an educational programme which emphasizes interaction between classroom teaching and practical experience. It is a participating institution in the national pilot “Project to Improve the Quality of UniversityStudents”. The University’s Youth League Committee was the only one among Normal Universities to receive the title of “National May the Fourth Red Flag Exemplar”. Our students’ results in the CET-4 and CET-6 examinations for non-English majors, and the different levels of examination in computer skills, are consistently in the front rank in our Province, and we have achieved noteworthy success in national theatre festivals, sports tournaments, academic competitions, science activities and similar events. For example, the “Blue Sky” society for protection of the environment has repeatedly been named as a nationally outstanding student organization. The World Wildlife Fund has awarded it the “Best Conservation Practice Award for Global Living Lakes”. It is the only higher education student organization in the country to be given this award. The Pureness, Vigor, Responsibility—Efforts to Cultivate Young People’s Spirit and Shape Young People’s New Image submitted by the school won the first prize of the eighth National University Campus Cultural Outstanding Achievement; The choir of the Conservatory of Music won the gold prize in the vocal category of the professional group in the 4th National College Student Art Exhibition Competition. Our graduate Yang Wenjun became the first sportsman in history to win successive Olympic gold medals in sprint canoeing. Jin Ziwei, with the other members of the Chinese team, achieved an amazing breakthrough in winning the gold medal for women’ s rowing tours in 2008, and as well she was the national flag bearer for the Chinese athletes at the 16th Asian Games in 2010. Lao Yi won the 2010 Asian Games gold medal for the men’ s 100 meters, becoming the first Chinese athlete in history to win this event at the Asian Games. In 2011, Shou Minchao won three gold medals at the 26th World University Games, the best result ever achieved by Jiangxi Province at these Games. The school has always attached great importance to the development of extracurricular academic science and technology activities led by the “Challenge Cup” competition, as an important means of talent training and an important platform for students’ quality development. The University team gained one item of special prize, two items of first prize, fifteen items of second or third prize in the 2013, 2015 and 2017“Challenge Cup” Outside-Class Academic, Scientific and Technological Works Competition, a breakthrough for all participating colleges from Jiangxi Province, entered top 50 of all participants and became an initiate University of the competition.In 2014, 2016 and 2018 “Youth Creation National College Students’Entrepreneurship Competition”, JXNU won one gold award of “Entrepreneurship Plan Competition”, “Entrepreneurship Practice Challenge Competition”, “Charity Entrepreneurship Competition”, and 11 silver and bronze awards. It is the only University in Jiangxi province to realize the three main events of  “Youth Creation” and the University has won the National Excellent Organization Award for many times. In the Fourth National Teaching Skills Competition for Normal College Students, the total number of studentawards rankedthe first in China (tied). In September 2017, the University joined the third China's “Internet +”College Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition. The group’s total score was among the top 20 in the country and won the National Advanced Group Award. In October 2018, the University participated in the fourth China’s “Internet +”College Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition and won one gold, two silver and two bronze, and achieved a breakthrough in Gold Award in Jiangxi Province. The total score was ranked seventeenth in the national universities, andwon the National Advanced Group Award.

Teacher Education

The University gives great priority to its distinctive tradition in teacher education. By taking a lead for the whole country by carrying out the “Practical Teaching Support Project for the ‘Red Land’ ”, the University has been chosen as a national experimental school for the implementation of the “Plan for the Support of Rural Teachers”. It has become the cradle for nurturing the talents of Jiangxi’s school teachers, the base for training the key teachers in the province, and the engine of reform and development in school education. Altogether it trains and sends out more than ten thousand teachers to schools of all kinds and at all levels, both in Jiangxi and in other provinces. Among them are many who have become the leading forces in middle schools, primary schools and educational administrations. The University advocates the integration of subject education and teacher education, academic training and teacher training, and the cooperation among the University, local government, primary-and-secondary schools. Up to now, it has established a practice-oriented course-teaching system, a ability-oriented practice-teaching system, and a competence-oriented teacher-training system. The University received approval for two “Excellent Teacher Training Project” sponsored by the Ministry of Education, two national-level quality course in Teacher Education, one national level demonstration center of experimental teaching in teacher education, and one outside-school practical base for college students majored in teacher education. In 2017, the school was selected by the Ministry of Education to “Promote the Implementation of Outstanding Middle School Teacher Training” project university. In 2018, the school won one first prize (second unit) and two second prizes (including one second unit) in the National Education Achievement Award for Basic Education. Since 2013,the University initiated the first tuition-free teacher training programme at bachelor-degree level in Jiangxi Province. TheUniversity took the lead in launching the “Training Activities for Teachers of Music, Sports and Fine Arts Majors in Rural Primary Schools” from 2017.The Jiangxi Teacher Website sponsored by the University leads other similar websites in the Province in terms of daily visits, effectively serving and leading the basic education reforms, and the professional development of primary-and-secondary school teachers in the Province. The office of online examination for primary-and-secondary school teaching license, the executive office of national primary-and-secondary school teacher training project, the office of IT competence enhancement project for primary-and-secondary school teachers in the Province are based in the University.The University undertakes the development of examination outline for primary-and-secondary school teaching positions, and the online workshop for primary-and-secondary schools teachers( kindergarten teachers) in the province.

Service to Society

The University holds to the principles of “gaining support by service” and “ensuring development by contributing”. It has always seen as its mission the economic and social development of Jiangxi province and service to its educational undertakings. It seeks to fulfill its roles as a store of talent, an engine of development, and an intellectual reservoir. Since 1949, it has actively supported and assisted in the establishment of local colleges, and trained qualified teachers for basic education, in the province as a whole. In recent years, it has given attention to developing excellence in the social sciences and humanities, and in foreign languages and physical education as well as music, sports, fine arts and foreign languages, so as to build a platform for the culture of the province of Jiangxi and assist in the development of higher culture in society at large. At the same time, it has given full emphasis to the development of the traditional basic disciplines and to practical science and engineering in the province. Scientific research achievements in these areas are represented by the carbohydrate synthesis, the anti-knock additives for gasoline, the nanofiber cloth, the polyimide nanofiber battery diaphragm and Poyang Lake studies.

The University has been active in the Jiangxi government’s plans for the promotion of science and technology. More than 100 million RMB has been invested in the programme to produce annually 1500 tons of the anti-knock additives for gasoline, Methyl cyclopentadiene three carbonyl manganese, part of the State plan for the development of high-technology production. This programme has brought an important breakthrough in the University’s capacity to turn its scientific research results into productive resources. The LED Epitaxial Material Industrialization Project initiated by the University has now become one of the three manufacturing bases in the industry around the country.

The Jiangxi Advanced Materials Nanofiber Technology Company, created by scientific researchers on the basis of scientific work done at the University, has held the opening ceremony for a plant in the Nanchang High-tech Industrial Development Zone. Investment in this project has reached 6 hundred million RMB, and once in action it will have an annual production worth 6 thousand million or more. It is another successful example of the results of high-tech research done at our University being turned into a productive asset. For seven times, Professor Fang Zhiyuan has been invited by CCTV to give Chinese history lectures in its column Forum of Various Schools. He is selected as the most popular lecturer. In 2011, the University’s Science and Technology Park successfully in obtained approval for a national-level “Base for Innovative Field-work in Science and Technology by Higher Education Students”.It become the fourth cohort of national-level Example Institution in Technical Migration in 2012. It became the third national-level University’s Science and Technology Park among Normal Universities around the country in 2013. In 2014, the school was approved “Cultural and Creative Industry Technology Service Platform” by the Ministry of Science and Technology’s torch plan, and in 2017 it was approved as a National Creative Space. The University serves as think tank for local economic development. It created an inner publication name Jiangxi Development Research in 2015, and thirty four of its reports gained instructions or comments from the provincial leaders. Since 2016, seventy research reports written by the faculty members of the University gained one hundred instructions or comments from the provincial leaders. The 22 research reports published in the Soviet Region Revitalization Forum Special Issue, an internal journal that was published in 2016, were approved by provincial and ministerial leaders. The 2018 research report Experience and Enlightenment of the National Civil Affairs Commission’s Counterpart Support to Le'an County was approved by Bartel, Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and Director of the National Civil Affairs Commission. In December 2018, our library was awarded the title of “National Reading Demonstration Base”. The two think tanks declared by the Jiangxi Economic Development Research Institute and the Soviet Area Revitalization Research Institute have been selected as the province's key new think tank pilot construction units. The Soviet Area Revitalization Research Institute has been selected as the Top 100 University Think Tank in China, becoming the only one in Jiangxi Province to enter the Think Tanks in China(CTTI) and the only one in the country that specializes in the research of the revitalization and development of the old Soviet areas. It has successfully held the “National Soviet Area Revitalization Summit Forum” for two sessions with the Rural Institute of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

International Cooperation

The University vigorously promotes international exchange and cooperation. We have established relationships of friendship and cooperation with more than 100 universities and other institutions in 20 countries or regions, and we have programs of mutual credit recognition and teacher exchange with 28 higher education institutions. Students from 30 countries or regions are studying here with us. A dozen domestic and foreign scientific research teams and research institutes are cooperating with us in the establishment of a set of key laboratories. With the University of Antananarivo in Madagascar and the AI-Quds University in Palestine, our University has established those countries’ first Confucius Institutes, and Confucius Institute at the University of Antananarivo was conferred the tittle of“Global Model Confucius Institute”. The University was named as one of the academies to receive overseas students on Chinese Government Scholarship, Jiangxi Provincial Scholarship and Confucius Institute Scholarship.

Over the past 79 years, the university has cultivated nearly 450,000 various outstanding talents . A large number of them have become backbone talents in various industries. Now almost half of prestigious teachers in Jiangxi’s primary and middle schools, more than 60% of provincial key teachers in primary and middle schools, over 80% prestigious teachers and disciplinary leaders in Jiangxi’s senior high schools are graduates of JXNU. Among them, there are Chinese contemporary educational masters such as Tang Sainan and Xie Weihe, nationally outstanding teacher Lai Daren, and national model teacher Peng Juan.
